A friend sent me some days back to read a NY times article. It was about how kids of IT pros go mostly to private schools that avoid at all costs the use of computers or other advanced technology in kids education. There was a pretty interesting and nice debate as to when it's best to introduce technology in the life a kid, how much damage and how much advantages it can bring.
And I found myself teaming with the parents who want their kids to enjoy a childhood free of TV, computers, cellphones. Yes, in theory I was supporting 90% of their views. But when I looked at reality, I had to admit was the world's biggest hypocrite. I cannot spend more than half an hour without checking my iphone. At work I check my email every 5 minutes. If we have spare time over the weekend the TV is on. Yes, our family is possessed. Obviously, Catalina learns behavior from her parents. She LOVES electronics. Photo cameras, iphone, computers are her best friends. She does not care for dolls. Here she is, happy beyond limits, when I gave her my old laptop. She did not throw things at it, did not bang it, she kept looking at the screen and touching gently the keys.
We do try to take her out for long walks and playground. Now, with the weather getting colder we do stay inside a lot. Luckily, her daycare is quite good, it is one of those schools who encourage outside play and all that healthy stuff :). For example, today Catalina came home with a whole "mamaliga" (romanian for polenta) on her shirt. And this is why: they played with corn meal. Yes, she LOVED it.
So here is hoping. She likes iphone and mamaliga equally :). Couldn't be any other way, she is just too perfect!
